2. What are the early applications of the 19mm push button switch?

In the early 19th and 20th centuries, most homes are still in the dark.

Incandescent lights have been present in some Victorian Homes but they still need to be turned on one by one just like the oil and gas lamps.

John Homes, an English inventor, developed the quick-break light switch in 1884.

With this switch, people only need to turn on lights using the push button switch in one control panel located in one area of the home.

Thanks to this invention many homes and streets were lighted up easily.

Later on, manufacturers developed different sizes of push button switches for many types of applications.

3. What is the life expectancy of a 19mm push button switch?

The life expectancy of 19mm push button switches is also known as the mechanical and the electrical life cycle.

The mechanical life cycle is the number of times the switch can be used.

For a high-grade push button switch, it can reach up to 1,000,000 mechanical life cycles or more.

Whereas the electrical life cycle would pertain to the interior electrical parts of the push button switch.

And for a high-grade 19mm push button switch, the electrical life cycle can reach up to 50,000 cycles or more.

It is important to consider high-quality push button switches to ensure longer mechanical and electrical life expectancy.

Otherwise, low-grade switches can cause sparks, premature failure of electrical parts, etc.

9. How a 19mm push button is made?

19mm push button switches are usually made by automatic assembly types of machinery that complete it from the enclosure up to its external parts.

The enclosures and other parts are already made and an assembly line personnel or assembly machinery only needs to properly put them together.

The following is a simple step by step procedure how a basic push button switch is made in a factory.

  1. First, the interior enclosure is placed on a holding platform.
  2. Then the internal mechanisms are inserted such as the push-springs, drop springs, and press springs.
  3. An inspection is done to check if the internal mechanisms are placed properly.
  4. Then the interior enclosure is fixed on the encasing which is normally a metal material.
  5. The head or actuator is then riveted to the top of the switch.
  6. The finished push button switch is removed from the assembly and is collected for packaging.

As mentioned, this is a simple procedure as some types of 19mm push button switches would require more steps and other materials to complete them.

A ductor test or also known as the resistance test that can be done using an ohmmeter.

Here’s how you can do it yourself:

  • Turn on the ohm meter and check if it displays “.OL” on its screen.
  • Set the resistance to x1 but if the ohmmeter has an auto-range feature there’s no need to manually set the resistance.
  • Connect the black and red leads to the ohmmeter.
  • Confirm if the ohmmeter is properly working by making the metal tips of both leads touch each other.
  • There should be 1 ohm or less than that display on the screen otherwise there could be an issue with the ohmmeter.
  • Then connect each of the lead tips to the push button switch terminals.
  • The ohm meter would have a 1 ohm displayed on the screen which means that the push button switch is on.

  3. Use the hand drill or hole saw to make a hole on the panel following the trace of the cut-out.
  4. Connect the cables to the terminals of the push button switch.
  5. Remove the hex nut of the push button switch and insert it through the hole.
  6. Fasten the hex nut to secure the push button switch in place.
  7. Connect the cables to the power source and the device you would like to operate.
  8. Finally, test the 19mm push button switch.

You may need a relay or a conductor to be connected as well depending on the complexity of your installation and the equipment you would like to operate.

A relay is an electrically operated device that helps converts small electrical current into larger amounts but would generally have a voltage rating of up to 250 volts.

A contactor is normally used to turn the electrical circuit on or off and would generally have a voltage rating of up to 1000 volts.
